Bill Barry, former director of labor studies at the Community College of Baltimore County, took out many of the pieces to his home to dry out.

"Most things are safe," he said. "But given the condition of the building where they were stored, we aren't taking any chances." 

The weekend brought a coldsnap that had many Baltimore residents without water. Many more had busted pipes. 

That was the case in the steelworkers haul, Barry said. 

The artifacts, which include everything from signage to ledgers, will be moved to another location Friday. 

During its operation, two unions operated from the property, the USW 2610 for those who worked in steel making facilities and the USW 2609 for those who worked in finished products. 

For years the buildings have fallen to disarray and operate now as a bingo facility.
