It's been the Tuna Valley's winter of discontent, Bradford City Water Authority executive director Kim Benjamin quipped when contacted on Sunday about crews working on yet another water line break over the weekend.

An 8-inch line ruptured around 3:30 p.m. Friday between Mill Street and Fisher Avenue on East Main Street, leaving a few dozen customers in the vicinity without water for roughly 12 hours and resulting in a few flooded basements and the closure of the road.

Crews were back on site Sunday to fix a leaking hydrant gate at the intersection of East Main and Fisher Avenue, according to Benjamin. He said crews with the Bradford City streets department used the excavation as an opportunity to do cold-patching on the two openings that were dug up on the street and also helped with traffic control on both Friday and Sunday.

Benjamin said even though it feels warmer outside he still encourages people to let their faucets drip so pipes don't freeze or refreeze. 
     It's a bit of a fake-out  as the air warms up, customers assume they're past having to worry about (freezing pipes), but the frost is very deep in the ground,he explained. As the ground moves and the frost comes out, there will be more interruptions of service, almost to certainty.
Benjamin said the ground usually freezes about two feet deep, but last year and this year some areas have frozen as deep as four or more feet. 
      Particularly under roadways, the frost always goes deeper. Weeks after that massive break, the Bradford area remains under a boil water advisory that could be lifted by the end of this week. Benjamin said he will be in talks with the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) first thing this morning seeking their authorization to go ahead with water testing. 
The water authority will collect samples and submit them to a DEP laboratory, and then two consecutive days of clear samples will be needed to lift the boil water advisory, according to Benjamin. He said testing results could be available by the end of the week. 
Benjamin said the Bradford community is not alone in this situation, as he has heard from many communities in the region that are experiencing line breaks and freeze-ups. 
Other communities are sharing our pain, Benjamin said. The entire Northeast is putting up with this. It's the winter of our discontent. A little cooperation from Mother Nature wouldn't hurt.

Severn Trent Water engineers working on the burst main in Ab Kettleby since 4am discovered a burst in a second pipe. 

At least three schools and a children's and community centre were closed, thousands of homes were without water and the Defence Animal Centre, (DAC)in Melton, was relying on storage tanks to supply the hundreds of horses and dogs at the base. 

Fleets of water tankers have been travelling to the area to pump water into the system to restore supply to around 2,000 homes and businesses which were initially without a supply. 

More than 1,000 schoolchildren were affected by the burst water pipe, with two schools in the town and a third in Ab Kettleby, closed for safety reasons. 

At John Ferneley College, in Scalford Road 1,090 students, aged 11-16 were given an unexpected day off.

Business joint owner Raj Bains said: "We open at 6am and people were coming in not long after that. We're due to get some more supplies this afternoon, but we hope the problem is fixed before then." 

The nearby Cove Sure Start Children's and Community Centre, in Sysonby Street was closed due to the burst. 

Opposite the centre Suzi Smith-Hawker had to take her three children to work with her at Quirky Love, the beauty salon and gift shop she runs with her sister. 

Oliver, five, and Casey, 10, are pupils at St Mary's and daughter Courtney goes to John Ferneley. 

She said: "Both schools texted me before 7.30am, which is brilliant. It's a shame the kids have missed out on the Red Nose Day events because they were looking forward to it." 

A Severn Trent spokeswoman said:"By 1pm the burst had been fixed and we are waiting for the sytem to recharge.Most customers' supplies are back on. 

"Any still without supplies will have them restored within minutes rather than hours.
